Internet Life Changing Essentials

You always need to change in order to grow. You can’t grow if you just stay where you are. You can’t grow if you don’t change the way you think and act.

In fact, changing your life is a continuous process.

It never ends.

In the past, the precious gift as heritage that parents would offer were cows to rear, land to cultivate and so on but with time it was found that education become a good offer.

Education, the mother of many things among which technology is included is the key drive to the knowledge economy.

It is hard to imagine life without it. But it is amazing the effect that it is bringing on our lives.

No matter how good your life is, it can always be improved so :

a) Slow down and enjoy it.

To change your life, you need time to think and reflect. If you are always busy, you won’t have the time to think about your life and taking action to change it.

b) Be willing to change

You can always change your life for the better however willingness is essential.

It’s your life; nobody can change it but you. If you aren’t willing to change, then nothing in this world can make you do so.
To build the willingness to change, first you should realize that your life can be better than it is now.

c) Accept responsibility

Accepting responsibility for your life is a must. Don’t blame other people for the bad things that happen in your life.
Don’t blame your family, friends, boss, or the economy.

Whether your life goes up or down depends on you and you alone. Once you take the responsibility, real change is within your reach.

d) Find your deepest values

Deep down in your heart, there are some principles that you know is true. Take the time to find them.

What do you think is the most valuable thing in life?

What principles do you think you must follow to live a fulfilling life?

These are the values you need to align yourself with.

Find them and remind yourself constantly about them.

e) Find your cause

You also need a powerful source of energy to overcome the inertia to change.

Your cause is the source of energy you need.
Your cause can give you the strength to overcome the inertia.

A speedy car in a round about cannot leave the place until the driver decides to take a given direction
Nowadays having a sustainable way of living might be a good cause for many.

How do you feel when you want to get something and it is not easy for you to get payment?

Have you ever had a dept for someone? How do you feel when you are unable to pay it back?

How do you feel when your colleagues goes in a restaurant and you have to leave them because you have not anything to pay?

I think everyone in a situation of poverty is always willing to go out of that box.

The problem is that it is not easy to find which approach or tool to use,
What would you do if you are in a forest and you got lost?

One day, I was in a forest going somewhere I did not know the right path to follow to reach the enjoyable endpoint.
In that forest you would go and found yourself where you started.
It was hard and discouraging,
I was like a car in the roundabout,
paths were interconnected like internet.

It was really not easy to find the right way to follow.
I set and reflected a bit on a possible option.

Taking a risk for a good cause is something advisable, that time an idea to follow another path came.

Sometimes in this life, we can change direction just for a good cause.

These are twelve years using internet for anything good for myself and many others and my life has certainly changed since I started to use it.

After such years enjoying the life changing benefit of internet, this is a fine time to reflect on the impact it has had over this lifespan so far.

1. Modes of Communication

I remember in 2000 opening my first e mail account, I had not a P O Box, to write to someone I had to use papers, unfortunately most of letters I sent out of Rwanda did not get responses.

Today, email is the preferred method of communication.

It is an indirect method that most people prefer. Your recipient can either choose to respond or not – and you have conveyed your message without needing to have direct communication.

In the internet age we also have VoIP (Skype and Google Voice) instant messaging and texting.

More importantly I started two organizations basing my services to the internet based inputs to improve the existing strategies and so far many activities that involves people from outside of my country have successfully become a reality facilitated by these technologies.

2. Searching

There were days when you wanted to learn more about a particular subject you would open a book or a dictionary. Today, we have lightning fast search engines that can give us thousands of links based on specific keywords.

I for example like to read about health issues and nutrition, faster and easily www.google.com, gives all directions.

3. Researching

Some years ago(2006-2008) I was done a research on `The economic contribution of Internet in the Development of Service Delivery` at National University of Rwanda, practically it was not easy to find books to use as reference or to read.

I was obliged to buy them outside and consult some others online.

That time I found that the manner in which other used to do their research for the dissertation books changed dramatically with my case.
I think that in the past, I would only have to go to a library to do my research, but internet made it easy.

4. Job Seeking

I remember before internet there were basically some options to get a job:

    • hearing radio announcement or reading newspapers
    • submit written letters wherever you think a vacant post might be
    • being referred with a friend

Imagine how frustrating it was, taking time and listening all radio job announcements, then hand written letters. But with Internet it is not time consuming, I tried that , according to my experience it was enjoyable and my life changed till today.

A good example is in 2010, seeking for internship, just I put a search key word in google.com search, then after I found the website referring to it and e mail address of the organization I needed to join,
I then wrote an e mail to them, just after 15 munites they called me via telephone, to fill up their application form, which I did with enthusiasm.

The lasting impact of that is that I become one of their staff a year after.

5. Online Training and Seminars

I remember a time that the only way you could get capacity building on the job was either by going to a training class or having a trainer come into your workplace.

With Internet landscape has certainly changed.
Webinars have become extremely popular in the internet age, bringing together a virtual class online.

Gone are the travel costs for both the trainer and the trainee, which lowers the cost for the class itself.
A good example is of three friends of mine that participated in an online training and got international certificates, some others applied to participate in a training overseas, which were not easy to find before internet age.

Try this an tell me http://www.imarkgroup.org

Beyond all that one can pursue a online degree instead of stopping thine job , you can subscribe to online course.

6. Buying Online

If you can’t find it in a local store, you can always find it online. I recently bought a laptop which is not locally available.
If you can’t find it at a local store, chances are you can find it online.

7. Freelance Writing

With the popularity of the internet, there has been an explosion in online content. As a result of this, there has been a huge boom in freelance writing. Opportunities exist as never before in this area.
If you love to write and are good at it, chances are you can find an online presence that will pay for your services.

f) Moving forward

Are there things you would like to improve using facilities availed by Internet?

List them all,
then, rather than focusing on stopping them,
focus on creating new Internet strategies that would facilitate its effectiveness.

g) Find a Tech Mentor

Finding a Tech Mentor can greatly help you improve your migration to Internet associated services. Not only can your Tech Mentor give you advice on what to do in certain situations, s/he can also warn you about possible pitfalls in your path.
